Tragedy Strikes as 49-Year-Old Michael L. Hart Fatally Shot Near Hawthorne Bridge

In a heartbreaking incident near the east side of the Hawthorne Bridge, 49-year-old Michael L. Hart was identified as the victim of a fatal shooting. The incident unfolded on December 6, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

Officers rushed to the scene following reports of gunfire near Southeast Main Street and Water Avenue just after 1:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Hart on the ground, and an individual was already performing CPR in an attempt to save his life.

Wesley Allen, a homeless individual residing in the area, shared his account of the tragic event with The Oregonian/OregonLive. According to Allen, he overheard an argument between Hart, known to him as “Nomad,” and a group of people. Allen, inside his tent at the time, recounted hearing two gunshots and witnessing a group of four individuals fleeing the scene.

Hart lay face down on the ground, prompting Allen and two others to rush to his side and initiate CPR. Despite their efforts, Hart succumbed to his injuries. Police arrived within 10 minutes, and an officer, in the course of responding, uncovered two bullet holes after cutting off Hart’s shirt. The victim was declared dead at the scene.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting. The incident marks the 70th homicide in Portland this year, out of a total of 71. This year’s homicide count follows last year’s record-setting figure of 101.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to Hart’s death to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
